Bilbao – info

Bilbao is the largest metropolitan area of the Basque Country, however with a city centre of very manageable size. It is nestled in the mountainous landscape of Bizcay and benefits from vibrant city life, contrasting with the nativeness of its quaint surrounding villages, the stunning beaches nearby & the presence of a super-port, that has been paramount for the city’s commercial significance in the past & its present rank amongst the top Spanish cruise travel destinations.

So whether surfing, sailing, shopping, hiking, sightseeing, coffee culture, the Basque heritage or ‘dancing the night away’ is what you are after to complement your language travels, this place should not be underrated as it has enormous all-round potential.

To name a few of the most recent architectural achievement: the ‘Museo Guggenheim’ designed by Frank Gehry, the modern metro system designed by Sir Norman Foster & the innovative airport designed by Santiago Calatrava are further add-ons to the well established classical beauties like the historical Arriaga theatre & ‘el Puente Colgante’, the worlds oldest transporter bridge, which still “slides” across the Nervion river to this day.

For the foodies & socialites of you, there are plenty of bars and restaurants in Bilbao; on the quest for the best one, there’s only 1 rule: the best Spanish bars are the ones that are bursting at the seams & it is going to be more than worth while to battle your way through for a glass of Txacoli and a delicious red pepper & anchovis-canapé with the indispensable olive on top.

Things to do in Bilbao:

Las Arenas: Check out ‘El Puente Colgante’ and admire the beautiful historical manor houses along Bilbaos gargantuan sports harbour and adjoining Ereaga beach. The harbour front is the perfect venue for some inline skating & jogging.

Mundaka: Have a look at the world famous wave, ridden by Kelly Slater & Andy Irons during former WSL Championships in this unspoilt Basque town.

Sunday markets: Take a stroll to ‘Plaza Nueva’ or the ‘Bolueta’ district to find vintage items, books, stamps, music & clothes and see if your newly attained language skills can catch you a bargain.

Euskara: Together with Spanish, it is the official language of the Basque country, one of the oldest lingos in Western Europe: Take a taster class with a local and find out all about its mysterious origin & moving history.

El Casco Viejo: The beautiful cobbled Old Town of Bilbao and very sort after place for dining, where the traditional plates of Pintxos make great sharing platters between friends.

Semana Grande, Christmas, Easter & Carnival: Another great way of maximising your cultural experience in Bilbao is to take those incredibly popular local celebrations into account when choosing your booking dates.
