Granada – info
Granada is situated in the south of Spain and in the heartland of Andalusia. It is an utterly interesting, quirky & picturesque town that tells a lot about its history. In the city centre you will find many beautiful architectural buildings from the Christian Renaissance.
The “Albaicin” quarter on the hillside paints a completely different picture with its narrow cobbled streets and a jukstapose of whitewashed Moorish houses and their delightfully decorated patio courtyards: it seems as if time has stood still or at least, is not important here at the old privately owned food stores, relaxing tea shops & hidden farmers markets.
If you can, try to visit when one of the many local festivities are celebrated, e.g. ‘La Semana Santa’ at Easter or ‘Santa Cecilia’, the procession in honour to the patron of Granada in November.
Things to do in Granada:
Alhambra & Generalife: Take your time to explore these truly magical Moorish palaces & their extensive gardens – definitely pre-book your tickets !
Albaicín & Camino de Sacromonte: Wind your way up the hill through the picturesque cobbled streets of the Albaicín to reach the cave houses of Sacromonte. Though you won’t find Bilbo Baggins here, a fiery gypsy – flamenco performance might be on the cards, don’t forget to take a breather at Plaza San Nicolás for a Cafe con Leche plus a dramatic panorama snapshot of the region.
Arab Baths: Purify your body in a Moorish Hammam session.
City centre: Go shopping, visit cathedrals & have a ‘Tinto de verano’ with free Tapas in one of the many bars.
Alpujarras: Region in the foothills of the Siera Nevada with its unspoilt white villages, perfect for hiking, horse riding, mountain biking & rustic dining – revitalising !
Nerja Caves & Tropical Coast: Spend the day at the sea side – take a boat trip to the famous caves & just chill out in the sun.
What students said about Don Quijote Granada
I arrived in Spain only with a handful of words and a desire to be able to communicate well in Spanish. The teachers at don Quijote have made the learning process great fun and an unforgettable experience. My fellow students have enriched that experience too and will take away many happy memories of my time in Granada. (Jenny Johnson, 51)
