Guanajuato – info
The city is located in the northern part of Central Mexico and forms the cultural hub of the country, a stimulating, artisty University town & UNESCO World Heritage site, built into the hillside, with maze- like narrow cobbled streets, in-numerous stairs, quaint plazas and lavish colourful buildings from colonial times. The young, student- population is not least accountable for the towns vast cultural appeal: You can enjoy a great choice of museums, concerts, plays, restaurants and cafes as well as a bustling nightlife. Guanajuato also provides a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere, due to its almost traffic free cityscape, because the main road network is being diverted through underground tunnels.
If you come to the city in October, you will have the privilege to experience the ‘Festival Cervantino’, the International Arts Festival, that is dedicated to theatre, music, dance & culture – a glorious event.
The climate here, at around 2000 metres altitude is moderate & warm at daytime but beware, it can get surprisingly chilly on a winters night.
Things to do in Guanajuato:
El Pípila Monument: Famous statue of a local hero & spectacular lookout. To enjoy the beautiful panoramic views you can either exercise your way up those steep stairs or take the funicular.
Museo de las Momias: Famous collection of mummified bodies, exhumed from the local cemetery.
Jardín de la Union: Beautiful square in the city centre, meeting point for locals, academics & tourists – music infused.
Teatro Juarez: Unique architectural masterpiece with dazzling interior – good value performances.
La Valenciana church: Built next to one of Guanajuato’s mines, made of pink volcanic stone with an altar covered in gold – Mexican Churrigueresque style.
The school offers a selection of free and paid activities for the afternoons and weekends, e.g.: Get- together with Spanish speakers, Film- nights, game nights, city tours, trips to concerts & events, villages, hot springs & Mayan ruins.
