Cusco – info
Welcome to the so called “navel of the world”! For all the fans of archeology amongst you: this is one of the most important areas in the whole of the Americas. When you visit this city, not only are you confronted with a mountainous environment at 3360 metres altitude, you are also stepping into a zone that dates back over 3200 years in history, and with it comes a wonderful world of contrasts, narration & activities to take on.
For many, Cusco is the place to set up base before adventuring off to see ‘the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu’, either on a 4 hour train trip or a 4 day- hike along the ‘Inca trail’. And whilst this journey is a must-do, Cusco itself and its surrounding areas have lots to offer too. The city houses many archeological sensations, like the remaining Incan stonework of ‘the Temple of the Sun’ (Qorikancha), which was built so well, it withstood earthquakes, whilst lots of the late colonial buildings had to be restored.
Culturally, you’ll be able to witness the blend of indigenous & colonial influences, being exposed in day to day life: of course by the locals, the buildings, the textiles, markets, music & festivals.
Amongst the visitors, history enthusiasts mix with backpackers & outdoor adventurers, who strive to get their thrill at rafting, bungee jumping, hiking, kayaking, horse riding, mountain biking & paragliding in the beautiful Andean landscape that surrounds the city.
Things to do in & around Cusco:
Relax & drink tea: Though this is one of the most exciting places on earth, why don’t you take it easy on your first day in Cusco as your body will need to get used to the unusual altitude. A good occasion to start getting into the native Coca tea – it will help you to acclimatise for further Andean hiking endeavours.
Eat: Try the local specialities & order yummy Cactus (no, it does not sting!), Lomo Saltado or be decadent enough to treat yourself to Guinea Pig – strong nerves are essential for an encounter with the latter.
Sacred Valley: Located 15km north of Cusco, it lies in the centre of the Incan Empire, measuring about 60km in length & famous for its Incan sites, colonial towns & remote mountain villages.
Sacsayhuaman: Historic Incan fortress- ruins on the hillside above the city. Well preserved stone walls & testimony of the vast masonry skills, the Incas did possess – UNESCO world heritage site!
Plaza de Armas: Main square in the centre of Cusco, first established during the Incan Empire to celebrate important yearly events. The Spanish Conquistadores added several churches to the site, replacing the ancient Incan palace – bustling & vibrant heart of the city!
The school offers a selection of free and paid activities on a regular basis, e.g.: Welcome – evening meal, guided walk through Cusco, Peruvian cooking-, Salsa- & music lessons, Latin American film screenings, cultural lessons, Machu Picchu – excursion, Inka trails, Rafting, farewell celebrations. You can also add a trip to the Sacred Valley and Andes rainforest onto your travels via this school.
