Valencia – info
Valencia is one of the best places to be around between the 12th & 19th of March when Spain celebrates the famous “Fallas”: a spectacle in which you can see bonfires & fireworks. At the end of the festivities giant figures made of card board are being burnt.
Also discover remains of the ancient civilisations which once inhabited this vibrant city, in fact the 3rd biggest in Spain. There are lots of exhibitions, fairs, museums & great nightlife up for grabs.
If you’ve always dreamed of being smothered in ‘ketchup’ for a day, take a trip to Buñol on the last Wednesday of August, an approximate 1,5 hours drive away from Valencia city, to join the “tomatina” street celebrations, surely a very special activity out of your daily routine.
Things to do in Valencia:
City of Arts and Sciences: Part of the “12 Treasures of Spain”, a majestic complex devoted to arts, science & culture, Avant Garde architecture, exhibitions, tours & workshops.
Mercat Central: Stroll along, ask the local vendors, which ingredients you need to cook paella & buy some amazing fresh products – grand modernist building & great atmosphere.
Playas: Take a picnic and enjoy the pretty unspoilt & fine sandy beaches.
Jardines de Túria: Follow the beautiful 5.5km long parkland that snakes through the city. It once was Valencias main river – pushbikes can be rented.
Ciutat Vella: The old town is housing many spectacular gothic, romanesque, baroque & neoclassical buildings.
ART/HISTORY/LITERATURE: Addressed to students with at least an intermediate level (B1), can be combined with Spanish language lessons, classes specialising on historic events, Spanish & Latin-American literature, artwork and culture.
COOKING: Roll up your sleeves & learn about the regional cuisine, create & taste the flavours of Spain, a great way to unwind & get stuck in, several lessons per week.
SALSA DANCING: Study this “art forms” and you will discover more than just a new dance: learn about the appropriate attire, facial expressions, passionate dance moves and attitude. A great way to get active!
Don Quijote schools are also offering various other afternoon/weekend activities e.g. city tours, visits to museums, excursions to nearby towns & villages as well as Tapas tours & movie nights.
What students said about Don Quijote Valencia
It was a great experience learning Spanish with don Quijote in Valencia and I can really say I had the time of my life. I stayed with other students in a student flat and was always given all the help I needed. I also participated in cultural classes and it was Las Fallas week which gave us a great inside into the whole tradition of the festival and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely do another course with don Quijote, but I would like to experience a different town, maybe Granada since I have also heart great comments about it. (Jadranka Alac, 26)
